Hats off to Mos Def, then, who is plainly unbeguiled by the folly around him—you can hear it in his voice, which barely [swells] beyond a sleepy murmur, as if he had just rolled out of bed. 

No such luck for Jack Black, who, perhaps because Gondry was too busy giggling over his own script, appears not to have been directed at all. Some of his early scenes, after the electrical surge, are painfully thrown away, and once again my wishful thinking drifted to Buster Keaton; just imagine what tremendous, gag-pulsing value he would have got from the sight of a magnetized man. 

A comedy without one foot [on] the ground is no more than a flight of fancy, as directionless as a [balloon]; the master clowns of silent cinema knew that, and so does Mr. Fletcher, the gravid elder statesman of this film. As he says to Mike and Jerry, "I appreciate your creativity, but let’s be realistic for a second." Be kind. Erase.
