The figurative use of catalyst, applied to any person or thing that gets things moving or that causes change or stimulates action, has made some purists object; 

they argue that the term ought to be restricted to its chemical field, catalysis, wherein a catalyst speeds or otherwise influences the pace of a chemical reaction. 

Both uses are Standard, however, and the only real danger is that catalyst’s figurative use may become a vogue word and a cliché.
