is sometimes objected to as pretentious, when just plain dog would be simpler (you don’t say "nice canine, good canine"), 

but sometimes you really do need a more general word than dog: The world’s canines, after all, include both wolves and dogs, as the world’s dogs do not. 

And canine loyalty has a different tone from doggy loyalty or doglike loyalty.
