The once (and future) Stanley Burrell borrowed the monster hook from Rick James' "Superfreak" and layered a few solid rhymes over it, his somewhat gravelly voice and supreme confidence covering up any deficiencies in lyric or delivery. The single promptly became a crossover pop and dance hit with (apparently) little effort, and its incredible success helped Hammer stay afloat for several years beyond his projected shelf life.
