D
–noun
a puppet manipulated from above by strings attached to its jointed limbs.
C
puppet (adj., n.), marionette (n.)
Technically a puppet is a kind of hollow doll that may be moved by a hand and arm thrust inside it, or by rods, or simply as a shadow on a wall or screen, and, also technically,
a marionette is a doll with articulated joints moved from above by means of wires and strings.
Puppet is also the generic term for all such dolls and figures, however, and the art itself is called puppetry; those who manipulate puppets of any sort are puppeteers.
Finally, we make much extended use of puppet to refer as adjective or noun to people or governments not their own masters but manipulated by others:
He had the title of king, but he was [the prime minister]’s puppet.
The party formed another puppet [government].
All these senses are Standard.
Suzanne's interest in Chinese marionettes links Hou's Red Balloon (as well as the original) to his 1992 masterpiece, The Puppetmaster. The mode can be off-handedly self-reflexive, as when Hou's camera ponders the virtuosity of two movers maneuvering [muh-noo-ver] a piano up an impossibly narrow stairway, or in the melancholy juxtaposition of [archaic 8mm home movies] with [Suzanne's voiceover characterizations].
