The Columbia Guide to Standard American English

scoff (v.)

is slang, mostly British, usually takes up, and means "to eat or devour," both literally and figuratively:

We scoffed [up] our [stew].
The army quickly scoffed up the [rebel outposts].

(Scoff meaning "to jeer" is Standard but is another verb entirely.)
