has two obsolete senses: "a cause of death, ruin, or irreversible harm" and "a deadly poison" (now Standard only in compounds such as ratsbane).
Nowadays bane is used primarily to mean "a curse" or "a source of harm," as in She is the bane of my existence. But see also BALEFUL.
